The Loafing Heroes’ fifth album (released in 2016) is a cosmopolitan blend of folk, poetry, world music and pop, a tapestry of lush harmonies and contemplative lyrics that is, in the words of one reviewer, “beautiful without being afraid of being beautiful.” The album was recorded and produced by the brilliant Tadklimp, and features a diverse and talented lineup, with Irishman Bartholomew Ryan (lead vocals, guitar) joined by an Italian (Giulia Gallina – lead vocals, concertina, piano, glockenspiel), a German (Judith Retzlik – violin, trumpet, backing vocals), an American (Jaime McGill – bass clarinet, effects), and two members (João Tordo – double bass, guitar; and João Abreu – percussion) hailing from Portugal, the country the group now calls home.
The album draws upon influences as eclectic as the members themselves, with haunting ballads giving way to smoky jazz numbers and then to dreamy folk song—timeless tales of loss and rediscovery, of isolation and transformation.
